The primary function of an ordo kalendar is to enable the clergy, altar guild, choir, and acolytes to properly prepare for the celebration of the liturgy. With this in mind, the few following notes on its design will make clear how this kalendar is laid out, and how it is best used.

• Major feasts, holy days, and days of obligation are printed in BOLD CAPS.
  
• Prayer Book holy days carry a picture of a book (&); holy days of obligation are further noted with a cross (X).
  
• Feast days are printed in regular type face.
  
• Commemorations are printed (within parentheses).
  
• The liturgical color of the day is noted in regular type face at the bottom right-hand side of each day.
  
• Days of fasting or abstinence are listed in italics.
  
• The missal calls for the use of the Gloria on feast days; it is not added on ferial days, during advent, on lenten ferial days, or at requiem masses. The creed is usually omitted on ferias, at requiems, and the ordinary feast days; it is always used on Sundays, feasts of our Lord and our Lady, and on feast days of doctors of the Church.
